Conan O’Brien Playoff Beard

Conan O’Brien Scores with Playoff Beard

Conan O’Brien walked onto the stage of the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver Tuesday night sporting a “Canada” ball cap, along with his suit, purple shirt and new red beard. And it wasn’t long before the Canada jokes started coming.

“A Vancouverite, a Vancouveran, walked up to me and said ‘nice hockey beard,’” O’Brien said. “In America, we call it ‘a beard.’ Here, everything is ‘hockey something.’ ‘Nice hockey cold sore.’”

But toward the end of the show, O’Brien got serious about this country, offering what seemed like heartfelt thanks: “Way back in 1993 when I first got started in television, just about everybody in America hated what we were doing. We were doing a lot of weird stuff. They didn’t get it, they didn’t like it and the first people to embrace us were Canadians. ... You saved my life.”

The Vancouver crowd certainly got it Tuesday night, applauding wildly throughout the hour-and-45-minute long show, the second in O’Brien’s Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television tour.

The show is just what you’d expect from the former and now future late night talk show host (who this week announced a deal with TBS that will see him return to late-night TV in November): quirky, off-the-wall and very, very funny.
