The future is looking bright for the Edmonton Oilers.
Not only do the Oilers have the No. 1 pick in June’s entry draft, but prospect Jordan Eberle was Wednesday named 2009-10 Western Hockey League Player of the Year and recipient of the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy.
The 19-year-old Eberle scored 50 goals and added 56 assists for 106 points in 57 regular-season games for his hometown Regina Pats to finish second in WHL scoring. Eberle’s 1.86 points-per-game was the highest average in 11 WHL seasons.
The five-foot-11, 184-pound forward finished tied for second in the league with 19 power-play goals and was also second with six short-handed goals. Eberle, the all-time leading goal-scorer of Canada’s world junior hockey team, was drafted in the first round (22nd overall) by the Oilers in the 2008 NHL entry draft.
Eberle will compete against potential future Oiler teammate Tyler Seguin in the competition for the Canadian Hockey League player of the year award.
Seguin, a member of the Plymouth Whalers who Wednesday was named the Ontario Hockey League’s most valuable player, is the projected No. 1 pick in the NHL draft.
Representing the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is Saint John Sea Dogs centre Mike Hoffman, an Ottawa Senators prospect.
