Jordan Eberle was hoping to play into May as a member of the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats.
Although that didn't pan out when the Pats missed the playoffs, he has happily accepted a noteworthy consolation prize: an invitation to Canada's pre-competition camp for next month's world men's hockey championship.
It's the second assignment for Eberle during what would otherwise have been a long off-season.
He played in 11 games with the AHL's Springfield Falcons, recording six goals and eight assists after the Pats' season concluded.
Springfield is the chief minor-league affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, who selected Eberle in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2008 NHL entry draft.
