Top Vezina Trophy Candidates
Brodeur, Miller, Bryzgalov in contention for Vezina
Perennial Vezina Trophy candidate Martin Brodeur is up against two first-time finalists for the NHL’s award as the top goaltender.
The New Jersey Devils stopper, who is a finalist for the ninth time in his career, is vying for his fifth career Vezina Trophy. Also up for the honour are Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller and Phoenix Coyotes puck blocker Ilya Bryzgalov.
The winner will be announced during the National Hockey League’s annual awards ceremony on June 23 in Las Vegas. The three finalists are based on voting by the league’s 30 general managers.
Brodeur won 45 games and posted nine shutouts to lead all goaltenders in a league-high 77 games. The 37-year-old also led the Devils to the Jennings Trophy, which is awarded to the team with the lowest goals-against average.
The Montreal native, who now has eight 40-win seasons, is the NHL’s all-time shutout leader, surpassing Terry Sawchuk this past season. Brodeur won the Vezina in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008.
