Russian Hockey Player Swears at Canada after 2010 Olympics

In a recent incident of post-game petulance, the Toronto Sun has learned that the words “F--- You Canada” (the first word was spelled out) were written in big, bold letters in the room of one of the Russian hockey players at the Athletes Village during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, following Russia’s 7-3 loss to Canada in the quarterfinals. The message was written on pressboard covering the kitchen island.

Renee Smith-Valade, Vancouver Organizing Committee’s vice-president of communications, confirmed the incident, but added that they are unable to confirm which player was assigned to that specific room or who actually wrote it.
“We’re not sure if it was an athlete or team official or possibly even someone else who wrote it,” Smith-Valade said via e-mail. “The writing was immediately painted over. Emotions run high at the Games and while we would hope that sportsmanlike behaviour and respect for property would always be the norm, these things can happen. We don’t take it too seriously and put the priority on just making sure it’s taken care of quickly.”
