Thermablade Heated Hockey Skates Not Dead Yet

Thermablade Heated Hockey Skate Blades

Thermablade Heated Hockey Skates were supposed to be revolutionary and several investors, including Wayne Gretzky, were confident they had a bright future. In 2007, Canadian skate blade manufacturer Therma Blade Inc. made the surprise announcement that their product would be used by NHL players.

The product? Skate blades that heat up, allowing the skater to move faster with less effort. The technological marvel, however, didn't convince NHL brass. Therma Blade, meanwhile, says that they haven't been beaten yet. Earlier this year Thermablade annouced new ownership in the company.

  • 68% Said they could skate further with less effort.
  • 61% Said they were able to accelerate quicker.
  • 63% Felt less fatigue while playing.

HOW THERMABLADES WORK

A1 microprocessor is inserted into each skate blade support. Along with an electric circuit, this transfers heat to the blade. The blade is kept at a constant temperature about 5° C).The layer of water between and the ice surface increases -- same principle as a Zamboni. This reduces friction and resistance between the skate and the ice.

The on/off switch has a proximity sensor to ensure that the blade is not accidentally turned off during a game. A pivoting nut ensures optimal blade position.
