Alfredsson to have surgery for hernia

Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will undergo surgery sometime in the next two weeks to fix a sports hernia. The recovery time is estimated to be from four to six weeks, or until Alfredsson and his family board the plane for the flight to Sweden in July.

A sports hernia is a common problem in hockey and soccer players, where there is a lot of sudden twisting and turning, and Alfredsson's injury has bothered him for a good part of the 2009-10 season.

"It started actually before the Olympics, but it didn't bother me in games," he said, adding it gradually got worse.
